Karate by
definition means “empty hand”. Certain
weapons were developed and used during the same time that the martial arts
were being created. These techniques
are parallel to the techniques used in karate. Even though the study of ancient weapons
(kobudo) is a separate martial art, they work together in harmony, improving
the basics of both empty hand and the weapons simultaneously. This is furthered by the study of the
Japanese samurai sword. This is the
single weapon that Okinawan weapon systems were created to defend against. Our
System is YAMASHITA-MATAOSHI system headed by Tadashi Yamashita. Regional leader is Dave Bloem and taught at
Bassai by Phil Oakes. The system is
distinctly different than most of the traditional Okinawa kobudo systems in
that it incorporates some Chinese weapons and fighting philosophies and tends
to be more dynamic.
In today’s society modern weapons have replaced the sword and other
ancient weapons. Yet the study has
some definite benefits. BENEFITS
OF KOBUDO 1. The traditions used links us to the past
and helps put the techniques used in modern
times with those of the ancient times creating a deeper understanding of both. 2. “Even thought kobudo has similar looking
techniques that mirror those of karate,
there are numerous techniques that build flexibility and strength.” 3. Kobudo’s techniques are in constant motion.
Kobudo creates
a mind set that is in constant motion
which is realistic to an actual fighting situation. 4. The study and practice of the formalities
give insight to a lifestyle where good living and being prepared for all things is a constant thing. By practicing this samurai code we hope to improve our personal lives.
